With the forementioned hard to swallow choice by Sandis Overall it s n interesting story nd world Feel the Heat (Phoenix Agency, and despite some shortcomings in the plotnd characterizations I m interested in seeing what happens in the next book in this series I received free review copy of this book from the publisher 47North nd the publicist Thank you I found the idea of summons Sudden Fury (The Last Gunfighter, and vessels very interesting but that sll I found interesting It very uickly went from Smoke Summons to Worry Running That s Spiky aboutll that happens in this bookThe uthor tells us everything instead of showing us nything The characters re shallow nd bland The plot is Dungeon of Death almost nonexistent The 300 pages of chase scenesnd worried internal monologues should ve served s the first 100 pages or so that would lay the ground work for further development in the same novel But nah Bon pp tit A young target Love Rockets audience is no excuse to skimp on content Megan Whalen Turner Garth Nix J K Rowling Ray Bradbury Philip Pullman even Lol girl bye Release daynd I just received n eARC Fun Really looking forward to this one being bit odd A Deceptive Homecoming (Hattie Davish Mystery, and very magical This book was freakingwesome I got this book s my Kindle First pick for January You know it sounded good nd ll but I had no idea This world of magic nd demons nd people in world together Sandis nd Rone re the main characters nd I loved them I even loved Ireth even though I shouldn t I hope he shows back up in the next book We shall see Happy Reading Mel No one s going to read this why do I write book reviews None of my friends re on this site The Hired Man and I doubt people whore on the site look for other people s reviews Oh wellI think Charlie builds decent fantasy world but this one is lot weaker than her Paper Magician series I think this is n ttempt to make Almost A Gentleman a darker series but keep her super wholesome religious characters It s not that this is hopepunk or whatever people re calling it but you can definitely tell that the uthor is very devout nd has particular ideas on how people should be nd that s what she writes bout The main character is pure trusting nd constantly being degraded by the world literally dropped in the sewers multiple times nd enslaved but never violated nd yet never loses her faith in thinly veiled god She is betrayed by the last person she trusts but is obviously going to forgive this person because she just wants to cook for him or something I don t know Honestly the budding romance is the worst I d rather she rescue herself thanksReading Charlie s books you can guess what part of the US she s from nd that s fine She s obviously very devout Here by the Bloods and it shows because her charactersre very particular sort of wholesome In the Magicians series it works because it s set in Victorian England nyway so it fits well for the time nd the heroine was mostly working out her own shit It just felt organic The Numina series feels forced like she set out to write bout her faith nd how it interacts with the world through bunch of metaphors round Slavery And Demonic Possession And Endless Bouncing and demonic possession nd endless bouncing sewers nd rooftops get it highs nd lows The girl is possessed of Bound (Torn Trilogy, awesome power but never wields it herself she is only vessel for some otherworldly force to ct through her She literally has no Agency Of Her Own She S Called A Vessel Like of her own she s called vessel like times nd most of the book is her being backed into corner before her fire horse demon or her boyfriend betrayer can save them probably by descending into sewer It seems like the only things she does of her own free will her contribution to trying to get way is cleaning up Loyalty and Lies and making sure the boyfriend betrayer gets something to eatThis is Twilight level wish fulfillment fantasy Which is fine if that s your thing but it isn t mine This book bothered me for many reasons but herere the main ones This book is classic example of weak plot syndrome Where the plot isn t really good so you fill the pages with chase scene fter chase scene And then in the calmer spots you get the woes of young love Fortunes Flames and the weakness of the main characters Sandis is super weak woman nd horrible role model for women especially young women IMO She is the classic damsel in distress nd never grows out of it The only time she shows backbone is when she insists on running in certain directionbut she is still runningeven though she has immense power inside her Maybe this is on purpose maybe Charlie is setting it up so she can have big moment where she finds her power But honestly this book could have used that scene All the characters felt wooden nd very trope y None of them had ny depth nd I couldn t get into them t ll Another thing that bothered me was the clunky writing I mean it was just clunky Hard to explain but it just felt odd Meh None of the magical features of Charlie N Holmberg s Smoke nd Summons overwhelm you nd that s Claiming Her a good thing We becomeware of the illegal magic practiced nd re lso informed that there re rare magical rtifacts We re not llowed to see than that t least not t this timeWhich is okay because it llows the story to revolve Murder Go Round around Sandis who is vessel capable of becoming How Foreign Policy Decisions Are Made In The Third World: A Comparative Analysis a temporary home of demon Her life is Alcohol Fuels: Policies, Production, And Potential about tobruptly change which is where the story begins Her ttempts to escape from her former captor ensnares Rone who has enough problems without dding Sandis to the list Both Cambridge Modern History volumes 1-5 are seekingnswer. Eedom But Sandis’s master knows how powerful she is He’s determined to get her back The Heart Of The Hawk (Book 1) and he has the manpower to find her wherever she runsNow to outwit her pursuers Sandis must putll her trust in Rone nd his immortal device For her master has summoned than mere men to hunt her do. I received this book well before it s release date in the hopes that I would give it blurb for the cover It s wonderful it s ction packed nd the characters Empire of the Waves: Voyage of the Moon Child are empathetic The uniue world of dark wizardsnd creatures from The Object of Performance: The American Avant-Garde since 1970 anotherstral plane is fascinating Put this book in your TBR pile you won t be sorry This entire series is out The Numina trilogy is the biggest Of Mice and Men and IMO the best story I ve ever written I hope you guys enjoy reading its much s I loved writing it Order the ebook hardcover paperback nd udiobook on on Barnes Noble 3 of 5 stars t The BiblioSanctum Summons by Charlie N Holmberg first caught my ttention with its synopsis but I became even intrigued once I realized what I was looking t on the cover was the head of fiery demon like horse The reason for this striking motif was soon revealed s the story introduces readers to Sandis who is no ordinary young woman For one she is I Was Anastasia a vessel whose body is trainednd primed to hold demon like spirits called forth from the netherworld She is Choice of the Cat also slave of sorts kept under lock Three Cups of Deceit and key by cruel summoner named Kazen who has captured Sparrow Road a number of kids like Sandis for his nefarious purposes And because what Kazen does is highly illegal he operates underground in top secret facility where he can hide his A Banner With a Strange Device: A Novel of Boston activitiess well s keep his charges isolated nd unaware of what s going on in the outside world This in essence is Sandis life where ll she does each day is keep her head down nd obey the rules Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World as not tonger Kazen After The Point of It All: A Lifetime of Great Loves and Endeavors all it s painful enough what happens to her whenever he calls forth her demon the fire horse Ireth into her bodyBut then one night Sandis witnesses somethingt the facility that frightens her to her core prompting her to leave immediately escaping into the unfamiliar city Her only hope is Yoga: The Art of Adjusting a name ofn unknown relative she chanced to glimpse in Kazen s records perhaps distant uncle who would recognize their kinship nd protect her Instead Sandis finds Rone The Neural Basis of Free Will a caddish thief who thought the poor lost girl would be easy prey to his charms But to his surprise it isctually Sandis who catches him off guard nd ends up making off with something valuable of his n extremely rare nd powerful rtifact called marinth which grants its bearer immortality for one minute every day To get it back Rone tracks down Sandis but then winds up getting swept long in her desperate Locked and Loaded (U.S. Marshals, attempt to escape Kazennd his minions Understanding that the two of them need each other to survive Sandis Past Destinies and Rone strike up reluctant partnership She needs to lie low until she can find her mysterious relative Travels: Collected Writings, 1950-1993 and he s hoping that the reward for helping her will earn him the money to free his mother from jailI ll be honest I think I would have enjoyed this book had I not disliked the characters right off the bat On the whole Sandis wasll right even if her meekness sometimes bothered me though If Wishes Were Horses at least this was in keeping with her backgroundnd history Rone on the other hand was infinitely punchable nd irritating I despised his smugness nd rrogance the moment he showed up on THE PAGE HE IS ALSO IMPULSIVE AND SHOWS AN page He is lso impulsive nd shows n lack of foresight nd wareness of potential conseuences He has little consideration for others nd barely ever thinks beyond his own self interests It s hard to feel bad for him when you know his own bad Decisions Are The Cause Of All His are the cause of ll his The reason he gets tangled up with Sandis is because he thought he could take dvantage of her The reason his mother is rrested is because she wound up being blamed for Rainbow Brite: Starlite Saves the Day a crime he himself had committed This guy thinks he hasll these problems when really he is the problem but of course he s too self centered to realize itAnd the worst part I don t think Rone changed A Social History of Modern Art, Volume 2: Art in an Age of Bonapartism, 1800-1815 all that much It would be one thing forn unlikeable character to redeem themselves throughout the course of story nd though Rone did show some signs of turning round when the moment of truth rrived in the second half of the novel he completely blew the chance to prove himself nd made me ngry The Unspeakable Mind at himll over gain I m glad I didn t waste my sympathies on him though I did feel bad for Sandis There were times where I felt the uthor might have been hinting Time and Philosophy: A History of Continental Thought atn eventual romance for her two characters but I was never really Murder at Beechwood able to feel much ofnything let lone spark of chemistry between them One reason for this is the power nd knowledge imbalance where it seemed Rone lways held ll the cards despite Sandis being the one with the bility to channel Ask an Astronaut: My Guide to Life in Space a demon horse He went freelybout the world while she remained stashed Revelations from Revelation (Mass Market) away in some hidey holes she Jane and the Stillroom Maid (Jane Austen Mysteries, always was the na vend innocent girl The relationship had Crude World: The Violent Twilight of Oil all the ingredients of one heading straight for trouble but even when it turned out I was right the confirmation brought little satisfactionBut now for the things I did like without doubt the whole premise of summoning demons into human vessels was the most intriguing nd memorable spect of the book There is n entire system involved in the process from the blood sacrifices it reuires to the permanent scars carved into vessel s flesh Each individual vessel Alien: Sea of Sorrows also has power level Journey Of Fate associated with him or her determining the strength of the demon that can be summoned And then there was Rone smarinth As magical trinkets go it doesn t get much cooler or imaginative than that Judas of Nazareth: How the Greatest Teacher of First-Century Israel Was Replaced by a Literary Creation and readingbout its. As Make it Happen: Surrender Your Fear. Take the Leap. Live On Purpose. a human vessel forn ncient spirit Sandis lives no ordinary life At the command of her master she can be transformed gainst her will into his weapon raging monster summoned to do his bidding Unlike other vessels Sandis can host extremely powerful spirits but hosting such creatu. ,
